Journaling doesn’t have to be perfect, and it definitely doesn’t need to look like the ones you see on Pinterest with gold-foiled calligraphy and twenty highlighters lined up in a rainbow.

When I first began, I asked myself the same questions you probably have right now: Where do I even start? What if I mess it up? Is there a “right” way to do this? Spoiler: there isn’t.

What journaling is—is a personal time capsule. It’s a way to capture the small details that might otherwise slip through the cracks of everyday life. And if you’re ready to start your own journey (without stressing about doing it perfectly), here’s a 5-step journaling guide you can use to begin. Think of this as your permission slip to start small, experiment, and create a beautiful mess that’s completely yours.

Step 1: Start Small, Start Bold

I want to say, don't buy five journals at once. One notebook or sketchbook and one pen and a sticker sheet is more than enough. As time progresses you can collect ephemeras and souvenirs from where you have gone. And it adds a personality to your creative endeavor-a personal time capsule done in a creative style.

Jot down one line a day: what you ate, what song you loved, or who made you laugh. Thoughts not limited to these can be a way to express creatively in your text style.

Small steps add up-your journal will grow with you.

Step 2: Make It Your Time Capsule

Think of your journal as a treasure chest, not a homework assignment.

You can give this attention to detail as you are getting comfortable on each session. I know we all love to finish a project. But I learned to in my process is leave some for the next time. But cohesively plan to match whatever expression of art you will have for the next sesh.

Write little snapshots: your coffee order, the weather, or flaunting the today's outfit.

Capture the "ordinary" moments-they're tomorrow's nostalgia.

Step 3: Capture the Creative Details

Doodle in the margins, add stickers, or tape in a ticket stub-let your page breathe. Not constricting to what you feel like doing at this point in time.

Write freely, no rules. Your creativity doesn't need permission slips. That is why, it is a creative journal time capsule of events and just like a journal you can write descriptions and even full page thoughts on this dear page spreads.

Remember, details bring your story alive-it's like seasoning your meal. You'll be happy you did!

Step 4: Express Ideas, Not Perfection

Spill out your thoughts, even the half-baked ones. They still matter. I love to keep mine personal. Like I am talking to a confidante friend. I can be free of not making it aesthetic at times, and there's also reservation at other times.

If you struggle in creative writing you can forget grammar rules-your journal isn't your English teacher. And it is your personal expression for your eyes only.

Let your emotions lead. Joy, stress, even boredom, wishes all deserve space on the page.

Step 5: Make the First Step Known

Date every entry so you know your journey feels like a story unfolding.

Bold your first line, or add a little symbol that marks "the start". Either way you can do this at your own discretion. Make it also creative or what is best for your expressive thoughts. Just a thought.

Recognize the power in simply beginning-the rest will follow. And it will blend well.

“Messing up is part of the journaling game. Ink smudges, weird doodles, awkward sentences—who cares? Every so-called mistake is just your expression giving you material for the next masterpiece. So grab your pen, own your beautiful mess, and remember: magic is usually hiding under the coffee stains.” ✨
